It's been an absolute pleasure working with Alexa over the years. She loves plants and gardening and it shows in how healthy and beautiful she has kept the gardens in my home. Thanks to her deep knowledge and experience with native plants, my backyard has been a constant source of joy--both to me and the variety of welcome wildlife that come and visit. I appreciate how she brings her own point of view while at the same time consistently asking for my input on design and care choices. She's warm, considerate, flexible, an excellent communicator, and an overall great person. -Donald Ngwe

About The Proprietor

Growing up in the Pacific Northwest I fell in love with the beauty of the landscape and the way it inspires emotional and cultural ties. At a young age it distilled in me the importance of land preservation. Through my agricultural and non profit endeavors I grew the desire to pursue a career that can have a longer lasting positive effect on communities and enriching the land within those communities. Here at Understory Gardens, our goal is to create gardens that inspire accountable stewardship to the land to restore ecological balance while creating your dream outdoor space and provide specialized plant care for your growing garden. Although our focus is geared towards native and natural plantings, we can accommodate many different horticulture styles and aesthetics that support the long term health of your garden.

Alexa created a native plant installation for our front and back yard. Together with a vast knowledge of Northwest native plants and background in the visual arts, Alexa’s open easy communication style made brainstorming for a garden design a real pleasure. The design featured extensive new plantings while preserving the best of already established native plants. The incorporation of responsibly sourced gnarled ancient nurse logs tie the visual elements together, and elevates the overall effect beautifully. Our backyard is enclosed with special fencing with the purpose of preventing our cats from leaving. Alexa was sensitive to our concern during planning that any new additions of shrubbery not provide exit points for the cats to escape. Because of Alexa’s design, installation and regular maintenance, we now have a peaceful and safe retreat for ourselves, our dog and our cats, for which we are grateful. We’d recommend her and her work to anyone seeking a design and installation, or maintenance of an existing garden.
